Trail & Recreational Riding

Trail riding is at the heart of why many of us fell in love with horses in the first place—fresh air, good company, and the quiet confidence of a horse built to go all day. From winding forest paths and open farmland to mountain overlooks and backcountry adventures, American Quarter Horses are exceptional partners for trail and recreational riding. Their steady minds, athleticism, and sure-footedness make them ideal for riders of all ages and experience levels.

Here in Tennessee—and across the country—trail riding offers a way to enjoy your horse outside the show pen while staying connected to the broader Quarter Horse community. Whether you ride solo at sunrise, gather friends for a weekend outing, or explore new trails while traveling, recreational riding celebrates the versatility and heart of the American Quarter Horse.

Ride. Log. Earn Recognition.

AQHA Horseback Riding Program

The American Quarter Horse Association Horseback Riding Program is designed to recognize riders who enjoy their Quarter Horses outside of competition. Open to AQHA members of all ages, the program allows you to log the hours you spend in the saddle—anywhere you ride recreationally—and earn awards along the way.

How it works:

  • Riders track and submit the hours they spend horseback riding on their American Quarter Horse.

  • Hours accumulate over time and count toward milestone awards.

  • Awards include certificates, patches, and recognition from AQHA as you reach new levels.

The Horseback Riding Program is a wonderful way to:

  • Celebrate time well spent with your horse

  • Set personal riding goals

  • Involve youth, families, and non-show riders

  • Build a lasting record of your horse’s experiences

For many riders, it’s a meaningful reminder that every ride counts—whether it’s a quiet loop at home or a multi-day trail adventure.
