Ultimate TQHA Amateur, Champion Exhibitor, and TQHA President & Organizer

Joan Walker Headshot

Joan Walker may be the ultimate TQHA Amateur. As an All-Around exhibitor, she owned and showed several great horses as a World Champion in Hunter Hack and Reserve Champion in Hunter Under Saddle and was a Congress Champion in Hunter Hack, Horsemanship, and Western Riding.

As an organizer, she established the first official TQHA Handbook, making TQHA and Youth Association bylaws, Show and Futurity rules, and regulations accessible to and understood by all members. She raised funds, organized events, recruited good people, and promoted TQHA with great foresight, energy, and persuasion.

As TQHA President in 1981, Joan saw the need for a permanent office for membership and record keeping and led the way to establish our first Executive Secretary position, hiring Barbara Fisher, who maintained that office for 22 years. Joan established TQHA’s Amateur Association and changed bylaws so that each TQHA committee would have a representative on the Board of Directors.

Joan demonstrated that amateurs had an important future in AQHA, and today we honor her for her work on behalf of TQHA.
